Recreation Softball (SPRING ONLY)

Kindergarten to 8th grade

 

Our Spring softball  season runs from early April until mid June.  We have over 500 children participating on over 50 teams in our Spring program.  The Spring seasons are intended to be participatory in nature -- we hope that all players, regardless of ability, can have fun playing ball.  Our emphasis is on skill development and the invaluable lessons that participation in youth sports programs can provide -- sportsmanship, team work, and camaraderie.

 

Our program is divided into several divisions, primarily by grade level, as described below:

 

Kindergarten

 

Goal: To learn the basics of softball, throwing, catching, hitting and running and to have fun. All teams will be made with an equal number of players from each school to ensure new friendships are made. Teams are made of at most 7 kids.

 

Practice/Games:

Teams will meet once a week for a 45 minute practice followed by a 45 minute game.

 

Rules:

  • Players will use the T to hit, bat the whole line up and then switch.
  • If a player is called out on a play then they are out.
  • No extra bases on an overthrow.
  • NO KEEPING SCORE. No Pitcher, No Catcher.

 

Equipment needed: Glove, T-Ball or fastpitch softball bat, fielder's mask, helmet with face protection, cleats (suggested)

 

 

1st Grade

Equipment needed: Glove, T-Ball or fastpitch softball bat, fielder's mask, helmet with face protection, cleats (suggested)

 

 

2nd/3rd Grade

 

Goal: To learn the basics of softball, throwing, catching, hitting and base running and to have fun. All teams should be made with an equal number of players from each school to ensure new friendships are made. Teams should be made as even in ability as possible.

 

Players begin to understand the flow of the game and to work on force plays. Teams are made up of around 9-12 players.

 

Practice and Games: One 90 min practice per week: One 90 minute game per week.

 

Rules:

  • First 3 games are coach pitch. After that players come in to pitch 30’ (No walks, if there are 4 balls the coach comes in to finish the pitch count, 3rd time the coach comes in during an inning they remain pitching for the remainder of the inning).
  • Players can strike out by both kid and coach pitch (looking or swinging)
  • If a player gets hit by a pitch they get to decide if they want to advance to 1st or continue to bat.
  • No advancement on an overthrow (we don't just run around)
  • 3 outs or 5 runs max per inning
  • NO KEEPING SCORE.
  • NO CATCHER (played by a parent)
  • Play 4 in the outfield. All outfielders must stand on the outfield grass.
  • NO STEALING.
  • Offensive coach is the umpire and will call balls and strikes, and play catcher.
  • Offensive coach will pitch if needed
  • All players must wear a fielder's mask

Equipment needed: Glove, Fastpitch softball bat, fielder's mask, helmet with face protection, cleats

 

 

4th/5th Grade

 

Goal: To work on the flow of the game in a fun and controlled environment. 10 - 12 players per team.

 

Practice and Games: One 90 min practice per week, and one 90 min game per week

 

Rules:

  • Player’s pitch 35 feet:
  • No walks, if there are 4 balls the coach comes in to finish the pitch count)
  • If a batter gets hit by a pitch they advance to first
  • Players can strike out by both kid and coach pitch (you can strike out looking or swinging)
  • 1 base on the overthrow (we don't just run around)
  • 3 outs or 6 run max per inning
  • Play 10 in the field (4 out fielders must stand on the outfield grass)
  • 5 steals an inning
  • No stealing home
  • Leads allowed when the ball crosses the plate.
  • No infield fly
  • No drop 3rd strike
  • Offensive coach will pich if needed
  • All players must wear a fielder's mask

 

Equipment needed: Glove, Fastpitch softball bat, fielders mask, helmet with face protection, cleats

 

 

6th/7th/8th

 

Goal: To work on the flow of the game in a fun and controlled environment. 10 - 12 players per team

 

Practice and Games:  One 90 min practice per week and one 90 min game per week

 

Rules:

  • 40 foot pitching distance
  • One base on an overthrow
  • 3 outs or 6 runs per inning
  • 9 players in the field
  • 5 steals an inning
  • leads when the ball leaves the pitcher's hand
  • Stealing home allowed
  • No infield fly
  • No dropped third strike
  • All outfielders must stand on the outfield grass
  • All players must wear a fielder's mask
